Obituary of John Moore

DELMAR - John Latimer Moore (1921-2012) died peacefully in his home in Delmar, NY on Wednesday, September 5, 2012. He was born August 13, 1921 in Hingham, MA to Henry W. and Rosamond Moore. At the age of 12 his family moved to Washington, D.C. where John graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School. In 1939, John and his brother took Route 66 to Los Angeles in a 1931 Buick, where John attended Art Center College in Los Angeles, CA, studying graphics and design. He served in the United States Army from 1942 to 1945 in Ceylon, India and China, on assignment with the OSS and General Stilwell's staff, preparing maps and charts. After 1945, John worked on commercial exhibit design in Washington, D.C., where he met married Hedi Koppel of Rorschach, Switzerland, in 1950. After further studies in Zurich, Switzerland, and work in Santa Barbara, California, John went to work for Governor Nelson Rockefeller in 1959. He served on the governor's staff and in the State Office of Planning Coordination until 1972 when he started his own business, John Moore Graphic Design. After retirement in 1988, John spent many happy years traveling with Hedi, painting in his studio at home, and spending summers with family on Lake Winnipesaukee, New Hampshire. In Delmar, John also enjoyed doing production work as a member of the Slingerlands Players theater group, attending the Albany Symphony, listening to WMHT music programs, and painting with his regular painting group. John's paintings were exhibited at the Bethlehem Public Library, and he shared them with family and friends. John is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Hedi, retired from teaching (Bethlehem Central) of Delmar, NY; son Philip and wife Pat Connor of Salinas, CA; daughter Wendy and son-in-law Desmond Dinan of Falls Church, VA; son Ansel and daughter-in-law Pam Tierney of Groton, MA; his five grandchildren Charlie, Catherine, Conor, Cian, and Cliona; and nieces, nephews and cousins. Special thanks go to his home care assistants, and Community Hospice, who helped John through his final illness with comfort and dignity. In lieu of flowers, donations should be given in John's memory to a charity of the donor's preference. A memorial service will be held at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, Elsmere Ave. and Poplar Dr., Delmar, NY at 11:00 am on Saturday, September 29, 2012, followed by an open reception at St. Stephen's.
