I'm terribly to sorry to hear of the death of Nancy. I just learned of this today through a friend. I only knew her through email and phone correspondence, as she was the senior acquisitions editors at SUNY with whom I was corresponding about the forthcoming publication of my book on Repentance and the Return to God in Early Sufism. My impression, based on extensive conversations, was that she was an extremely pleasant person, very kind and understanding. My deepest condolences on your loss.
Kind regards,
Atif Khalil

I am so sorry to hear the sad news of Nancy's passing!
Nancy was the acquisition editor for my book on "The Tao Encounters the West" in 1999 and more recently "Moral Cultivation and Confucian Character" (w/ Peimin Ni, 2015). She provided great help in the process of publishing these books. Nancy has been an engine behind SUNY Press' long list of books in Chinese philosophy. Her passing is a major loss to the field of study in Chinese philosophy!
My deepest condolences to her family!

Dear Nancy, wherever you are, perhaps in the hearts of your closest friends and family,
I began working with you over ten years ago on one topic and kept going back to you with others because of the pleasure of working with you. We talked on the phone a few times, and it was always like we'd been close friends for a long time--what a gift! Thank you for all the years in which you made hard work fun. --John

I have known Nancy since high school. Nancy wrote wonderful birthday stories for many of her high school friends, usually with a backdrop of Star Wars, and always with the birthday person playing the staring role.
In collage we went to school just across the border from each other. I visited her up in Montreal many times, including during the 1980 Olympics where Nancy and I, and many of her Canadian friends cheered the American Hockey team to victory.
Nancy helped me with my Masters Thesis by proof reading it and never made me feel embarrassed about mistakes made in sentence structure or grammar.
I enjoyed going to foreign films or artsy films with Nancy and and then going out to dinner after to discus the movie. She often had interesting ways of interpreting the movie as she did on many topics we would discus.
Nancy had a vast wealth of knowledge and could alway recall it on a dime. She probably never lost a game of Trivial Pursuit.
Nancy was a kind person, and will be missed.

I worked with Nancy on the SUNY advisory board.
I am so very very sorry to hear about Nancy.
She was extraordinary!!! When I first met her, I did not know what to expect and
I learned very very quickly how wonderful she was. She was not only a fantastic editor but a truly literate person with a wonderful ironic sense of humor. I remember once using the "we" rather pompously in a SUNY press meeting.
She leaned over and whispered in my ear "Ezra, 'Only kings, presidents, editors, and people with tapeworms have the right to use the editorial 'we' ."
I looked at her in surprise. She smiled enigmatically. I truly was non-plussed. A few minutes latter I heard her voice whispering .."Samuel Clemens" with the best twinkle in her eye.
We had so many wonderful discussions about literature, Asia, and many a good meal together. I am shocked and will miss her enormously.
Best
Ezra

I have never met Nancy. My only contact with her has been via email, as, over the years, she patiently waited for me to complete a book manuscript, and generously guided me through a mystifying production process. It's funny: I felt her to be my anchor, both intellectually and technically, and can only begin to imagination what her loss will mean for those who were close to her.
My heart is heavy with this unexpected loss, and I extend my condolences to her family and all those who knew and loved her.

I worked with Nancy since 2006, first as an acquisitions assistant, then as an assistant editor, and finally as an editor at SUNY Press. Nancy was a true mentor as I grew at the press, and I will forever be thankful for her wisdom. I wish I had a chance to really stop and thank her.
Nancy was truly one of a kind. She knew something about everything, but not in a braggy way. We would discuss proposals at new project meetings and she would have a random fact or story for almost everything. She could truly talk about anything. We tried to convince her to go on Jeopardy, but she said she didn't know enough about sports.
She had a very witty, dry sense of humor. There were a lot of Nancyisms, we wanted her to have her own Twitter account or Tumblr. But Nancy was a very private and humble person.
She loved cats, and talked about her beloved deceased cat Sheba. Nancy was so supportive since Emma's diagnosis of renal failure. She went through it with Sheba, and could commiserate. She asked me every day how Emma was doing.
Nancy was a tea drinker, and would stop by my cube to use my communal electric tea kettle. She always shared, and I got to try some really nice teas. I will really miss our afternoon tea time.
Nancy was a friend and a mentor to me. Every day while I was studying for my masters oral exam she and my friend Andrew would come by and ask me about what I was reading and have me talk about it. I didn't realize until the end what a valuable form of studying that was. She was truly interested and wanted to help. She helped me a lot at work, brainstorming ideas for the AAUP conference planning meeting, helping me go over presentations, looking over my draft back ads when I was stuck. If I looked stressed she would ask me what was wrong, and help me break it down and get things done.
Nancy was very well respected by her colleagues, authors, and series editors. She was with SUNY Press for 26 years. I can't believe she's gone. Rest in peace Nancy, and thank you for being such a good friend and coworker.

I worked with Nancy at SUNY Press for seven years before leaving to join the Peace Corps in 2007. Her office was just across the hall from mine and she would often stop by and chat. She knew everything about Albany it seemed, which was really helpful me, having moved there after college and knowing nothing about it!
I also admired how she wasn't afraid to bring up tough topics that no one else wanted to deal with and her love of HWFC, which got us all volunteering there at one point or another.
Wow, SUNY Press has lost an incredible editor and a great soul.
Nancy, you will be missed!
