Obituary of Patrick Michael Stellato

Patrick Michael Stellato, beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend to many, passed away peacefully on June 12, 2022 to a better world at the age of 79, with his loving daughter by his side.

Pat was born on October 4, 1942 in Rome, NY to the late Michael and Josephine (Rizzo) Stellato. He was a graduate of Rome Free Academy and Hamilton College. He did post-graduate studies at Tulane University, New Orleans in English literature while teaching at Dillard University. Pat left the world of teaching in the early 70’s to move to Boulder Creek and the Santa Cruz Mountains, where he played music in rock ‘n roll bands.  He later returned to New York where he completed a law degree from University of Buffalo School of Law. He moved to Delmar with his daughter and worked at the NY Attorney General’s Office for 35 years before retiring in 2014.

Pat loved music; in his younger years he was a talented clarinetist and saxophone player.  He was a faithful and enthusiastic member of the St. Thomas the Apostle choir for 12+ years, where he made many friends. He also sang with the Jubilate Singers in their yearly concerts for several years. Pat enjoyed many activities, including cooking, travelling (especially to Italy), playing bridge with friends, hiking and cross-country skiing, the daily NYT crossword, hilarious poker games (punctuated with politics) with his long-time poker group.  In his retirement, Pat was a faithful weekly volunteer at the Sr. Maureen Joyce Food Pantry and volunteered with Community Hospice, visiting people in their homes and making home medication deliveries.

Pat is survived by his loving wife of 29 years, Candice Carroll Burnell Stellato; his daughter Rebecca K. Stellato (Marieke Oldenwening); his step-daughter Jennifer Burnell; his beloved grandson and “best buddy” Matthew Patrick Stellato; his sisters Marilyn (Larry) Greitzer and Linda Jo (Tony) Pfeiffer; sister-in-law Anita (Sam) Clayton; and many nieces and nephews.  He was pre-deceased by his step-son Charles Matthew Burnell.

We will remember him for his sly (yet gentle) sense of humor; his big, warm smile; his passionate views on justice and politics; his consistent generosity and kindness; his fierce love of his grandson.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 18, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 35 Adams Place in Delmar.  In lieu of flowers, donations in Pat’s name and memory may be made to: The Sr. Maureen Joyce Center Food Pantry, c/o Catholic Charities, 40 N.
