Obituary of Richard John Flynn

Richard John Flynn, 85, of Quogue, New York, passed away on February 14, 2021 in Albany, New York. Born in Brooklyn to the late John Edward and Ellen(nee) Meehan Flynn on July 19,1935. Richard was the third of five children. It was there, in his beloved Brooklyn, where he met the love of his life and future wife, Barbara Gale, in the third grade of St. Patrick’s Grade School. Richard and Barbara began dating at the age of 15, were engaged on Valentine’s Day 1955, married on April 7, 1956, and spent the next 65 years side-by-side. Together, Richard and Barbara created a beautiful life. They raised three children, became Poppy and Grammy to seven grandchildren, and most recently, met their newest addition, their beautiful great-granddaughter. Their home was always open to family and friends – a place of love, warmth and entertainment. His family will forever picture Richard meticulously skimming the pool, cruising in his convertible, and expertly grilling steaks. They will always cherish the memories of Poppy’s sharp wit and remember the life lessons they learned from him – that Irish eyes are always smiling, the best song is Danny Boy, and there is no better team in the world than the New York Yankees. In business, Richard proudly founded his stock brokerage firm, Murphy & Flynn, serving his clients with superior professional integrity and care. Second only to the love of his family was Richard’s love, dedication, and commitment to the friends of Bill W. He faced life One Day at a Time for over 53 years. Living the program faithfully, while always lending support to countless others, was the mission of Richard’s life. Richard is survived by his wife, Barbara Gale Flynn; their children, Richard (Gayle), Deborah (Brian Doyle), and Cynthia (John Sobiecki); grandchildren, Emily (Brian), Jillian (Jeffrey), Alexander (Hannah), Hilary, Ryan, Luke, and Logan; and great-granddaughter, Mia; his brother Walter (Diane); and, his many loving nieces, nephews and their families. Richard is predeceased by his parents, his two brothers, Edward and Donald, and his sister, Elizabeth. Richard loved the warm summer months and his July birthday. With that in mind, a funeral mass is planned at Immaculate Conception Church, Westhampton Beach, New York at 11:00am Monday July 19, 2021. After the mass, all are invited to a celebration of his life in Quogue, New York. Please email rjftribute@gmail.com to receive arrangement details. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Wilson House, https://www.wilsonhouse.org/ P.O. Box 46 378 Village Street East Dorset, Vermont 05253. Poppy, as you always said, “See ya in church!”
