Mark Weiss posted a condolence

In 1971 I had a part-time job cleaning lab glassware at Albany Medical Center. One day a man burst into my little closet of a room and asked if I was Mark Weiss. When I said yes, Dr. Meuwissen said to follow him and he sped off down the hall. Five minutes later I had been transferred to his lab where he informed me I was to become an Immunology lab tech. He said he had seen from my file that I had a solid grounding in Biology and Chemistry, he needed an extra tech, and I was wasting my time cleaning glassware, so that was that. For the next 1 1/2 years, he gave me nightly reading assignments and would quiz me on the materials early the next morning. During those 18 months I learned more about Immunology and medicine in general than I could have imagined I would ever know. The Flying Dutchman, as he was known to the medical students he took on rounds with him, was the best teacher I ever had, and left me with a lifelong thirst for hard science knowledge. He was an amazing person, had an astonishing amount of knowledge about most everything, and even taught this Southern boy how to ice skate and do it well. His passing is the world’s loss.

My son Matt, now 28, had severe allergies, sinus and ear infections and asthma as a child. He loved the outdoors but many times had to be inside because of his allergies and trouble breathing. There was so many sleepless nights with him being so sick. Dr. Meuwissen was the most caring, compassionate, best doctor my son and I ever had the privilege to have.

I worked with Hilaire at the University of Minnesota. We coauthored a few papers together before I was drafted during the Viet Nam war. Because of my work with him, I ended up being stationed at the US Army Medical Research Laboratory in Denver. He was no longer in Minnesota after I was discharged from the Army and returned to graduate school in California. Over the years, I have tried to figure out a way to contact him and feel terrible that we did not reconnect before his death. I haven't seen or talked to him since 1969. I googled him every now and then and again today when I was thinking about him. His obituary came up to my dismay. Hilaire was a mentor and friend to me. My condolences to Hilaire's family and the others who loved him. We lost an all around good guy and fine doctor.

My son, who is now 21 years old, suffered from allergies and asthma as a young child. There were many nights I slept in his room to be sure he was still breathing. Dr Meuwissen taught us how to calm him him during his asthma attacks, how to treat them, and how to decrease them. My son became an athlete and rarely has an issue. I credit Dr M with saving his life and he will always be my hero. God bless and may he rest I peace. Heaven has gained an angel!
