I loved talking baseball with John. He had a witty, dry sense of humor and his smile was infectious. I will miss corresponding with him a great deal. My thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones.

I always liked John. I remember him fondly in our many positive interactions—instructive on both sides when I knew the technology while John knew both the people and processes as the day shift Operations Supervisor at CHART in the early 1980's. Then later, socially in our wonderful Dungeons & Dragons group (with spouses and monthly dinners) and particularly at the lakeside house where Gord and Aard were “born.” His choice of Lawful Good Cleric for Aard was no surprise as I later came to know John. I can still recall how our independent choices of character names caused us both to share a spontaneous but enduring bond in brief, recurring paroxysms of laughter. Intellectual, serious, yet with a wonderful sense of humor, he had an affinity for Pink Floyd’s “Time” back then, no surprise there and even more ironic now as I reflect. John was an upstanding guy in real life, too, literally in stature and posture. Such erect, squared shoulders! He looked to me as if he could carry the weight of the world on them and that, if necessary, I’d have trusted him to do it. He always impressed me as a quiet thinker, but not reticent toward action after careful consideration. Alas, too late now as my snippets of memory nearly forty years later surely don’t do justice to the complexity and depth of the person John was, and had become, in the decades. They serve now only to remind me that I wish I’d kept more in touch. I’m so sorry, Maddy, yet relieved to learn that you were still together and able to spend those years with such a good and decent Man. I'll always cherish my memories of John. God bless you and your Family.

The last time I saw John was 14 years ago. We had a get together of our high school friends the year we all turned 50. I wish we had kept in better touch and as Mike Pohl said, I wish I knew he was ill so I could have told Turtle that I was with him in spirit an d that i missed him and that I loved him.
He used to sub for me on my paper route back in the day. Sometimes after delivering the papers we would hang out in his room and listen to Jethro Tull and Led Zeppelin albums. I remember John worked at McDonald's for a while and used to make something called the Thurlow special. He would make a Big Mac only instead of regular patties he would put in two Quarter Pounders. He was only supposed to be able to make them for himself but I remember we would go to McDonald's and he would go behind the counter and make two Thurlow specials and then walk over to the table where I was sitting and slide one over to me.
I'm in New Orleans right now and I don't know if I'm going to be able to make it back in time for the service. My heartfelt condolences to his family. John was a great guy and he will be sincerely missed.

I was so sorry to hear of John’s illness and passing the other day. My biggest regret is that I did not get to see him during his illness to offer support in his battle. He was a great guy that I shared many ups and downs with during our high school years. He was intelligent, unflappable, had a great dry sense of humor, and above all was always a great friend to me. I would like to extend my deepest condolences to his family. May you rest in peace Turtle.
