Obituary of Henry C. Meier

DELMAR - Henry Carlton Meier (Hank), 87, passed away on Thursday, July 18, 2013, at his home in Delmar, NY. Born in Fairfield, AL on December 16, 1925, he was the eldest son of the late Heinrich Wilhelm Meier and Anna Margaret Meisch, who immigrated from Esslingen, Germany in 1924. Henry was predeceased by his wife Mary Richerzhagen Meier. He is survived by his children, Elizabeth Meier Osborne and Joseph Cyril Osborne, Jr. of Roanoke, VA; Henry C. Meier, Jr., and Nancy Gruber Meier of Castle Rock, CO; Margaret Meier Thompson of North Adams, MA; Carol Jean Meier and Haywood Kellogg Schmidt of Winchester, MA; Jacqueline Meier Czub and James Peter Czub of Schaghticoke, NY; and Steven Richard Meier and Christina Watson Meier of Latham, NY; eighteen grandchildren, and fifteen great-grandchildren. He is survived by his brother Richard Norman Meier of Macungie, PA. In addition to his wife, Henry was predeceased by his brother Ralph William Meier. Following his graduation from Pottsville High School, in Pottsville, PA, Henry attended Pennsylvania State University. In 1944, during World War II, he interrupted college to enlist in the U.S. Army, where he served in France, and received his 2nd Lieutenant commission. He returned to Pennsylvania State University and graduated in 1949 with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering, majoring in Mechanical Engineering. While in the service, he began corresponding with Mary Richerzhagen Meier, who would become his life-long love and wife of 59 years. Henry started his career with E. I. Dupont de Nemours and was an accomplished engineer and project manager for 35 years, working in Aiken, SC, Wilmington, DE, and Newark, DE. Throughout his life, Henry was an avid watercolor artist. His most notable achievements include his acceptance into the American Watercolor Society, as well as numerous awards and medals in prominent galleries around the country, including the Philadelphia Watercolor Society, the Salmagundi Club, and the Baltimore Watercolor Society. After retirement from DuPont, Henry opened his own studio and developed a notable business and teaching career in Lewes, DE. Henry always felt that his greatest achievement was raising his six children with his wife Mary. He shared his love of the outdoors, hunting, fishing, art and their log cabin with his family. Relatives and friends are invited to call on Sunday, July 21, 2013 from 3:00 to 6:00 pm in the Applebee Funeral Home, 403 Kenwood Ave., Delmar. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, July 22, 2013 at 9:30 am at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 35 Adams Place, Delmar. Interment will follow the Mass in the Gerald BH Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, 200 Duell Road, Schuylerville, NY at 12 noon.
