SLINGERLANDS – William D. Bennett entered into eternal rest on Sunday, July 3, 2016. Bill enjoyed a long and active life in the Albany, NY area. He was born in 1923, the son of William M. and Jennie D. Bennett. A lifelong resident of the Town of Bethlehem, he was a veteran of the U.S. Navy in WW II. Bill was a graduate of Bethlehem Central High School and the Lescombe School of Aeronautics in New Jersey.
Mr. Bennett served as the third President of the Security Supply Corporation, a long established local plumbing and heating supply family business headquartered in Selkirk, as well as the Selkirk Warehouses real estate holding company. He was also involved in several other local distribution and realty companies. He was a former Director of the State Bank of Albany and Norstar Bank of Upstate New York.
He was a past President of the Board of Camp Thatcher and the Bethlehem Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Bennett served for many years as Treasurer and Board member of the New York State Plumbing and Heating Wholesalers organization, and the American Supply Association. He was a Board member of the Bethlehem Cemetery Association, the Greater Consistory of the First Reformed Church of Bethlehem and the Delmar Reformed Church. He was a Governor and longtime golfing member of the Albany Country Club and served as President and longtime member of the area's oldest golf league, the Two x Four Golf Association.
William Bennett was predeceased on October 1, 2014 by his wife of 68 years, Allison C. Bennett, noted local writer and historian. He is survived by his children, Susan (Robert) Scofield of Kennedyville, MD; Keith W. (Susan) of Stuart, FL and Mary Lou Terko of North Ferrisburgh, VT and grandchildren, Jeffrey and David Scofield, Amy L. Bennett and Adam Terko, as well as one great granddaughter, Beatrice Scofield.
Relatives and friends are invited to call on Tuesday, July 12th from 4 to 7 pm at the Applebee Funeral Home, 403 Kenwood Ave., Delmar. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, July 13th at 10 am at the funeral home.
