DELMAR- Virginia Goodwin Holt Cavanaugh, 96, beloved wife of the late David J. Cavanaugh, and local resident for more than 60 years, died Wednesday, January 23, 2013 at the Good Samaritan Lutheran Health Care Center.
Born in Biddeford, Maine, she was the daughter of the late Clarence and Anna Holt. She graduated from Thornton Academy in Saco, Maine where she was Salutatorian of her class. Mrs. Cavanaugh then graduated from New England Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing in Boston. She was supervisor of nursing at the Deaconess Hospital for four years when she enlisted in the US Navy Nurse Corps, serving in the South Pacific during WWII. She later volunteered at the Red Cross and Albany VA Hospital and worked as an RN for Dr. Raymond at Albany Medical College. She was presented with a certificate of appreciation by the former Gov. Mario Cuomo for her wartime service and was honored on Guadalcanal Day in Albany. Her memberships included the American Legion, Blanchard Post #1040, the V.F.W. and she was one of the original residents of Delmar Place.
She is survived by her daughter, Anna C. Newbould; grandchildren, David J. Doherty and Alicia M. Boaz (Jeff); great grandchildren, Emma, Bradly and Ryan Boaz; sister, Marianne H. Gillis of Gorham, Maine and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by a sister, Maria Holt English.
Relatives and friends are invited to call at the Applebee Funeral Home, 403 Kenwood Ave., Delmar on Sunday, January 27, 2013 from 2 to 4 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, January 28, 2013 at 9:30 am in the Chapel of St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 35 Adams Pl., Delmar. Interment will follow the mass in St. Jerome Cemetery, Holyoke, MA.
