Ted Putney

Freeman Theodore (“Ted”) Putney, Jr., 89, of Albany, New York, passed away peacefully on May 26, 2022, in Albany, New York.

Ted was born in Newton, Massachusetts to Adelaide Melendy Putney and Freeman Theodore Putney, Sr. on April 1, 1933. He graduated from Wellesley High School and earned an AB (American Studies) from Yale in 1955.  Ted taught artillery survey in the United States Army from 1955 to 1957 and graduated with a MBA (Finance) from Harvard Business School in 1959.  He was married to Sherry Scott Putney of Logansport, Indiana for nearly 65 years.

Ted served as senior executive, trust and investment manager at State Bank of Albany and Norstar from 1959 to 1988, then as investment manager at Cowen and Prudential until his retirement in 1999.  He served on the Bethlehem Town Board, IDA, and several town advisory committees including Land Use Management, 20/20 and Citizens Conservation.  Ted had a keen and abiding interest in the well-being of the Hudson Valley, including sponsorship of civic events at his and Sherry’s historic river home in Cedar Hill.  Together they enjoyed many walking trips and visits to valley historic sites, and supported Clearwater, Olana and Scenic Hudson.  Ted was a trustee of Mohawk Hudson Land Conservancy, Towers Housing Albany, Albany Rural Cemetery, ENY Nature Conservancy, Memorial Hospital, Shaker Museum, Childs Nursing Home and HILL, and served on several other local civic, Presbyterian, alumni and bank boards.

In addition to his activities in the Hudson Valley, Ted enjoyed spending time on Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire with family.  Ted enjoyed reading, travel, maps and navigating, watching ice hockey and following the Boston Red Sox.  In addition to his wife, Ted

is survived by his beloved brother Jesse Putney (Sue) of Nashua, NH and daughters Anne Scott-Putney (Astrid Sheil), Sarah Putney and Melinda Putney.  He is forever loved by his grandchildren, Minna Weisberger, Nathan Swire (Cynthia Akagbosu), Jesse Swire, Abigail Weisberger, Adah Farbman and Jonathan Farbman.  They cherish their memories with Ted on the banks of the Hudson.

Friends are welcome to visit with the family at Applebee Funeral Home, Delmar NY, on Tuesday, May 31, 2022, from 4 to 6 PM

Burial will be at the Albany Rural Cemetery after a private service with Rev. Gail Faithfull, a longtime family friend, officiating.
