DELMAR - Sarah Ann “Sally” Rooney passed away unexpectedly into eternal life on Wednesday, September 17, 2014.
Sally was born on December 26, 1933 in Hornell, NY to the late William L. Rooney and Margaret Karl Rooney. She is survived by her brothers James K. (Nancy) and Michael (fiancée Ann Marie Mancuso), her nephews Kevin P. (Christine), Derek S. (Ellen) and their families, numerous cousins and her favorite companion Bullet.
Sally graduated from Hornell High School in 1951 and Buffalo State Teachers College in 1955. She began her teaching career in Lewiston, NY then moved on to Painted Post, NY. In 1960 she moved to Delmar and taught first and second grade in the North Colonie Central School System (Southgate School) retiring in 1991.
Sally loved to travel and extensively toured the U.S., Eastern and Western Europe, Scandinavia, Russia and the Middle East. Her favorite destinations being Norway, Austria, Ireland and Italy, which she toured six times.
Sally was a very active person; she was a member of the Diocese of Albany Association of Ladies of Charity, Delmar Progress Club, North Colonie Teachers Association, Albany Area Retired Teachers Association and past member of the Southgate Parent Teachers.
Sally took great satisfaction and pride in her twenty-two years of volunteer work at the Teresian House. She truly enjoyed working with the residents and staff there. Through the direction of her church, St. Thomas, she frequently visited the patients at St. Peter’s Hospital.
Sally had a large group of friends that frequently got together for lunch or dinner followed by a good bridge game and conversation on politics or the Yankees. Meeting new people and her friends and family were her life lifeblood. It is what she had lived for!
Relatives and friends are invited to call at the Applebee Funeral Home, 403 Kenwood Ave., Delmar, Sunday, September 21, 2014 from 3 to 6pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, September 22, 2014 at 9:30am in St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 35 Adams Place, Delmar, followed by burial in Calvary Cemetery, Glenmont.
