WILEY, Ruth (Hummer), 91, loving wife, mother, grandmother, recently of the Beverwyck Retirement Community, Slingerlands, N.Y., passed away Thanksgiving night at St. Peter 's Medical Center, Albany, NY with her family at her side.
Ruth was the wife of 61 years of the late Leslie Jay Wiley who died in 2006. They lived most of their married life and raised their family in Cobleskill, NY. Ruth taught first grade in Schoharie and later, early childhood education at SUNY, Cobleskill. Her husband, Les, served as High School principal and Superintendent of Schools in Cobleskill, retiring in 1973.
The youngest of seven children born to Andrew and Ruby (Carr) Hummer of Titusville, PA, Ruth earned her undergraduate degree from Syracuse University and a Masters Degree from SUNY Oneonta.
Her teaching career began in Schenevus, NY, where she met Les. They were married in 1945 and moved to Cobleskill shortly thereafter.
Ruth's life revolved around her love of her family, her friends, her home, and the beauty of their extensive gardens. She actively and eagerly supported all of her loved ones, maintaining close and current family relationships with all, no matter how geographically far flung. She leaves a daughter, Helen R Doane, of Harwich, MA and four grandchildren, Katherine W. of Washington, D.C ;Matthew C. of Delmar, NY ; Seth W. Doane of Beijing, China and Sarah D.Sherwood, of Boulder, CO. along with 15 nieces and nephews. Her son, Stephen J., of Glenmont, NY, recently predeceased her.
A memorial service celebrating her special life will be held 1 p.m. Monday, December 2 at the Methodist Church, 428 Kenwood Avenue in Delmar, NY. Interment will be private at the family plot in Chazy, NY. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made in her memory to Heifer International, 1 World Avenue, Little Rock, AR. 72202.
