VOORHEESVILLE - Lt. Col. Richmond C. Young (Retired) passed away peacefully on 10/25/13. Born on 1/2/1923, he was predeceased by his wife, Marilynn J. Young, and is survived by three sons: Richmond E. Young (Rochester, NY), Michael A. Young (Dewey, AZ), and Steven R. Young (Voorheesville, NY); and four grandchildren: Kaolin R. Young (Austin, TX), Emery E. Young (San Antonio, TX), and Michael T. Young and Erin M. Young (both of Voorheesville, NY).
He was a B-17 bomber pilot with the 838th Bomb Squadron of the 487th Bombardier Group (Heavy) stationed in Lavenham, England during WWII, and completed 34 successful bombing missions over Europe. He was shot down once and crash landed in Poland, evaded capture, and was returned to England to continue flying. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the NYS Conspicuous Service Cross, among others, during his military service.
His working career was in the Bureau of School District Reorganization for the NYS Education Department, from which he retired in 1982.
