Richard Cyril Radko passed away at home with his family on September 20, 2024, after a long illness. He was 78 years old. Rich was born and raised in Yonkers, NY, the son of Cyril Radko and Mary Haraschak. He loved his hometown, and remained close with his childhood friends throughout his life.
Rich served with the US Army in Vietnam as a proud member of the 589th Engineering Division. He attended several unit reunions and participated in gravesite memorials until he became ill.
Rich graduated from UAlbany and enjoyed a 38-year career as a history teacher at Shenendehowa High School. He was a powerful storyteller who will be remembered for his ability to make other cultures and eras come alive for his students.
Rich loved travel and the outdoors. He visited all 50 states and many national parks. He hiked Half Dome in Yosemite, jogged the Golden Gate Bridge and snorkeled in Hawaii.
He is survived by his wife and favorite adventure partner, Ellen, his son Nick, daughter-in-law Katie Durrence and grandson Christopher Cyril (Kit); his brother Gene (Zita) of Yonkers and their children, Leah and Greg; and his favorite nephew Gary Radko (Ginny). He also will be missed by his large extended family with whom he spent many happy holidays and vacations. The family thanks his beloved caregiver Morice Whitehead, the HBPC program at Stratton VA in Albany and Community Hospice for their care and support.
