DELMAR - Priscilla Wing passed away quietly in her sleep on August 8. She was a survivor of a serious stroke on July 11, 2008, and had been living at home in Delmar since August of 2009. The stroke had left her unable to independently perform any Activities of Daily Living.
Priscilla was born in Hingham, MA in 1940. Her parents were Barbara and Ted Plant who lived in Hingham from most of her early years. Priscilla graduated from Hingham High School in 1958. She earned a BS in Early Childhood Education from Wheelock College in 1962. She married Paul Wing III of Hingham, MA in 1962, shortly after graduating from Wheelock. They moved to Poughkeepsie, NY where she taught school in Wappingers Falls and at the Poughkeepsie Day School.
In 1964 Priscilla and Paul moved to Berkeley, CA where they went to graduate school and were steeped in the liberal culture of the 60s. Priscilla earned her MS in Early Childhood Education from San Francisco State University in 1965 and taught school from 1965 until 1969, when she had her first son Daniel. She and Paul also started their exploration of the scenic wonders of the western U.S. and broadened their appreciation of cultures, cuisines, theater, and the arts.
They moved to Boulder CO in 1971 where they continued their exploration of national parks and major cities across the country. Priscilla was a volunteer in the pre-school that Daniel attended in his very early years. She also developed into an avid cook.
They moved to Delmar, NY in 1975 and set down roots to raise their family which in 1977 included son Matthew. Priscilla was a volunteer in the Bethlehem Central School District until Matthew graduated from BCHS in 1995. She was active in both the PTA and the Bethlehem Music Association. After that she turned her attention to community organizations, especially Equinox in Albany, NY.
Priscilla is survived by her loving husband, Paul Wing of Delmar, NY, and her sons Daniel of Delmar, NY and Matthew of Pittsfield, VT. She is also survived by her sister- and brother-in-law Anne and John Decker of Chestnut Hill, MA and several cousins on the South Shore in Massachusetts.
In the years after the stroke a team of family members, home health aides, therapists, and friends made it possible for Priscilla to live her life to the fullest. Special thanks are due to Latoka Alford, Chasity Toro, Alexis Annahij, Kayla Feliciano, Cathy Dubois, Linda Bernhard, Suzy Arenos, Marion Harwick, and Mary & David Shaffer. Priscilla will be remembered by everyone who knew her for her good humor and positive outlook in the face of the significant limitations she faced.
The family suggests that in lieu of flowers donations be made by well-wishers to a charity of their choice. Services will be private.
