Norma Jean Carroll, nee Lusk, 79, passed away peacefully on February 28, 2022 at Teresian House Center for the Elderly, following a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s.
Norma was born in Crystal, WV on January 16, 1943. She spent her childhood in Pocahontas, VA and graduated from Pocahontas High School. Norma was the daughter of Earnest and Vadie Lusk, nee Gill. Her mother died when Norma was a child and she was raised by her stepmother, Oma Cleo Lusk, nee Groseclose. Following high school, Norma trained to become a dental assistant subsequently working in Florida, Virginia, District of Columbia and New York over the next thirty years.
Norma was a beautiful, kind, generous and loving wife, mother, sister and aunt, always putting the needs of others above her own. She was a volunteer at Child’s Hospital in Albany for 15 years and derived enormous satisfaction from assisting families seeking medical care.
She loved her extended family deeply and her trips to Roanoke, VA to spend time with her mother, sister, nieces and their families were always a highlight of the year. Among her favorite pastimes were annual trips to Aruba for more than twenty years and league bowling at Del Lanes.
Norma is survived by her husband, Bill, and son, Tim, the two loves of her life. She is also survived by her sister, Patty Maze (Kevin); nieces, Paige Mitchem (Mike), and Lindsay Polfelt (Ted); grandnieces, Natalie Paul, Taylor Polfelt and Emery Mitchem; grandnephews, Tyler and Bryson Mitchem and Ryland Polfelt, all of Roanoke, VA.
Norma’s family extends special thanks to Kay Murphy, Norma’s loyal and devoted friend of forty eight years and to Sonya, Niki and Bebe of Carmel Gardens East at Teresian House for the kindness, patience and compassion shown to Norma during her residency.
Relatives and friends are invited to call on Saturday, March 5 from 9 to 10:30 am at Applebee Funeral Home, 403 Kenwood Avenue, Delmar. A funeral service will follow at 10:30 am in the funeral home. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Glenmont.
