DELMAR - Monica Larrea Rodriguez died on the morning of September 7th at sixty years old. She was in her home in Delmar, New York surrounded by her loved ones. She is survived by her husband of 35 years, Carlos, and her two sons Federico and Ari. There will be a visitation period at Applebee Funeral Home in Delmar on Saturday, September 12th at 8am, followed by a ceremony at 9am. Monica, who emigrated to the United States from Chile in 1980 in order to pursue her PhD in Psychology, will forever be remembered for her vivacity of spirit and her thirst for knowledge and new experiences in all walks of life. A postdoctorate researcher at Columbia University and later an Associate Professor at SUNY Albany, Monica's work in delay of gratification is widely cited and studied, and considered a significant contribution to her field. From her pre-teen years precociously reading Jane Eyre (in English) while still in primary school, Monica had a passion for literature and was an avid reader up until her very last days. Monica dedicated her life inside and out of the workplace to the aid of women and minority families and to the betterment of their situation: from large-scale research projects that reached families across the state, to the helping hand she extended to new friends acclimating to life in the USA. A survivor of colon cancer for 7 years, Monica was seen most at the side of her loving husband, laughing and philosophizing as she battled illness with grace and levity. She will be sorely missed. monicasmemory.com
