DELMAR –Mary Barkman, 94, died on Tuesday, September 27, 2016 in the Community Hospice at St. Peter’s Hospital.
Born in Watervliet on October 28, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Matthew and Catherine (Lapishka) Opalka. She lived most of her life in Clarksville devoting her time to her three children and late husband, Theodore. She worked for the NYS Bar Association and was a member of Clarksville Community Church. She later traveled across the United States with her husband, settled in Florida and then returned to the area. She had many hobbies and was an excellent cook, baker and crafter. Everyone enjoyed the beautiful things she made. She loved going to Bingo, watching the NY Mets and most importantly spending time with family and friends.
Survivors include sons, Dean (Colleen) Barkman of Voorheesville and Larry (Rosanne) Barkman of Feura Bush; and her daughter, Wendy (Richard) Storm of Clarksville; as well as grandchildren, Matthew (Jen) Barkman, Erin (Eric) Datri, Amber (Justin) Winne, Adam (Trina) Storm, Holly Storm, Shannon Powers, Sonja (Matthew) Gorman and Erika Barkman and nine great-grandchildren. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews as well as her dear friends Kathy Rathbun and Pat and Janet Arico.
She was predeceased by her loving husband of 61 years, Theodore Barkman in 2007. She is also predeceased by twin granddaughters Kelly Lee and Renee Elizabeth Storm, great grandson McKenzie Ingle, her brothers John and Michael Opalka and her sisters, Anne Hoblock, Julia Micare and Pauline Spiak.
Relatives and friends are invited to call on Thursday from 11 am to 1 pm at the Applebee Funeral Home, 403 Kenwood Ave., Delmar. A funeral service will follow the visitation at 1 pm in the funeral home. Burial will be in Memory Gardens, Colonie. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of Mary to the Clarksville Community Church, 1997 Delaware Tpk., PO Box F, Clarksville, NY 12041.
