Marti McSharry

February 2, 1940 — September 6, 2024

Delmar

Marti McSharry, a warm and gracious spirit, was born on February 2, 1940, in Columbia, Tennessee. Her life came to a close at home on September 6, 2024, after a brief illness, leaving behind a legacy of kindness and an enduring love for her family and community.

A trailblazer in her own right, Marti was one of only two women from her high school class to pursue the field of science. She earned a degree in biological sciences from Westhampton College of the University of Richmond.

Marti's professional journey began when she became certified as a Medical Technician at the University of Virginia. It was there that she met her beloved husband, James J. McSharry, with whom she forged a life filled with love, laughter, and shared dreams. Her commitment to serving others led her to work at the Albany Stratton Veterans Administration Medical Center and Albany Medical Center, where she made significant contributions, including the establishment of two HIV labs prior to her retirement. Her dedication to her profession exemplified her caring nature and made a lasting impact on many lives.

Beyond her career, Marti was deeply engaged in her community. She was an active member of various organizations, dedicating her time and talents to the Elsmere Elementary School PTA, the Girl Scouts, the Delmar Progress Club, and PEO International. Singing in her church choir brought her joy, along with civic engagement and cherished moments spent with her numerous friends and family. She loved quilting, needlework and other artistic pursuits. Marti's kind and social personality drew people to her, and she will be remembered for her incredible warmth and the love she exuded.

Marti leaves behind her devoted husband, James, and her loving children Karen Meier (Henry) and Patrick McSharry (Julie Sasso). She also treasured her role as a grandmother to Fiona McSharry, Emily Meier, Grady McSharry, and Allison Meier, who brought her boundless joy. In addition to her immediate family, she is survived by her brother, Martin E. Bratcher, Jr. (Pat).

Marti was preceded in death by her parents, Martin E. Bratcher, Sr. and Marinelle Bratcher, whose legacy of nurturing and kindness she carried forth throughout her life.

As we gather to celebrate Marti's life, let us remember the love she shared, the lives she touched, and the joy she brought to all who had the fortune to know her. A memorial service will be held in her honor at Applebee Funeral Home in Delmar, NY, on Saturday, September 14, 2024, at 3:00 PM.

Marti McSharry's impact on this world will surely resonate in the hearts of everyone she has touched, and she will be dearly missed.
