Marilyn M. Cummings

1929 — November 14, 2018

GLENMONT - Marilyn Miller Cummings passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday afternoon, November 14, 2018, surrounded by loved ones. Marilyn was born in 1929 in Bronx, New York to Harold and Hazel Miller and raised in Holland Patent and Pleasantville, NY before attending and earning her Bachelor in Fine Arts degree at Syracuse University, where she met her loving husband, Len Cummings. Upon graduation, they married and started their family in Herkimer, NY before moving to New Hartford and then Delmar, NY. Family was the center of Marilyn's life and she described herself as a 'homemaker'. Marilyn was a woman of quiet grace, thoughtfulness, selflessness and positive energy. She espoused confidence and had a zest for life. One of her many wise sayings was "Everything happens for a reason." and somehow, it seems she was always right. Marilyn and Len developed wonderful and longtime friendships "on the hill" in New Hartford and through their involvement with the Utica and Albany Curling Clubs and through golf at the Albany Country Club, Riverbend CC and Western Turnpike CC. Throughout her life, Marilyn also enjoyed dancing, painting with watercolors, sewing, trying new recipes, tending to her flower gardens, and traveling abroad. Her favorite food, to be eaten at any time, was ice cream! She also engaged in many volunteer activities, including the Albany Institute of History & Art, and the Utica Junior League and ARC, working with children with special needs. Marilyn was predeceased by her parents, her loving husband Leonard, brother James and sisters-in-law Joan and Peggy. Marilyn is survived by her beloved children David (Debi) Cummings, Cathy Haker, Margaret (Jim) Viviano, and Susan Williams (Joe VanValkenburg). She was loving "Gram" to grandchildren Ian (Stephanie) and Ashley Cummings, Matthew (Kate) and Corinn Haker, Carrie and Nicholas Viviano; and Great-Gram to Thomas and Lucas Cummings and Lily Haker. Marilyn is also survived by her loving nephews and extended family. Family would like to express appreciation to the special caregivers from Right at Home who assisted and provided comfort to her in her home during the past several months. Calling hours will be on Monday, November 19th from 4 to7pm at Applebee Funeral Home, 403 Kenwood Avenue, Delmar, NY. Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may send a remembrance in Marilyn's name to the American Heart Association, Community Hospice Foundation, American Cancer Society or the charity of your choice.
