GLENMONT - Marie A. Wiedeman, 103, passed away on January 24, 2013 at Good Samaritan Lutheran Health Care Center in Delmar. Born in Albany on October 1, 1909, she was a retired school teacher who lived and worked in the Capital District her entire life. She was an active member of St Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Albany for many years. Her father, Carl G. Wiedeman, owned an auto repair shop in Albany. Her mother, Marie Tegler Wiedeman, taught in local schools. Marie had one brother, James, who predeceased her in 1996. She has two nieces, one nephew and many cousins in New York, Ohio, and Germany.
She started her teaching career at the Cedar Hill schoolhouse in Selkirk with degrees from the NYS College for Teachers in Albany (1932) and SUNY New Paltz (1935). Later she taught at the Glenmont Elementary School before retiring in 1968 to care for her ailing mother. Although Marie never married, she was devoted to the children who passed through her classroom. She had an excellent memory and was able to recall the names and faces of most former pupils and followed their lives and careers. Marie was a lover of nature, the outdoors, teaching, travel, cats, dogs, garage sales, church suppers, and history. After her retirement she joined the Bethlehem Historical Society and was president of that organization. The Cedar Hill School where she began her teaching career now serves as a museum for the Historical Society.
The family would like to thank the staff of Good Samaritan where Marie spent the final years of her long life for their devoted care and support.
Family and friends are invited to call at the Applebee Funeral Home, 403 Kenwood Avenue, Delmar on Monday, January 28, 2013 from 10:30 am to noon. Funeral services will begin at noon at the funeral home. Interment will be in Eagle Hill Cemetery in Albany in the spring.
