Margaret (Meg) Augusta Boulton Elbow, 96, passed away peacefully at home in Delmar, NY on September 14, 2017 with her daughters and her long time devoted caregivers, Debbie and Adessa, by her side.
Meg was born January 30, 1921 in Neutral Hills, Alberta, Canada. At age 12, after attending a one-room prairie schoolhouse, she went to live with relatives in England for a better education. Upon graduation from Rachael McMillan College in London she began a career in early childhood education. Years later she earned an American B.A. degree from Empire State College.
Meg returned to Canada from England in 1943 and met her husband, Matthew H. Elbow, while pursuing further education at Columbia University in New York City. They married in 1947, moving to Albany for Dr. Elbow's career as a professor of history at SUNY Albany. He died in 2005. Meg reveled in all things international, and loved the sabbatical years she spent with Matt and their daughters in the Middle East.
In addition to raising three children, Meg was Director of Kenwood Day Care Center, continued studies in early childhood education, wrote children's stories and a children's book, "The Rootomom Tree." She was an active member of Westminster Presbyterian Church for over 67 years.
Meg is survived by her daughters Margaret Elbow Conn and Susan Elbow. Her daughter, Anne, died tragically while on a high school exchange program in Peru in 1970. She is also survived by siblings Helen Boulton Elliott, Betty Boulton Andrew, Nelder Boulton and Eric Boulton and predeceased by brothers Russell and Basil Boulton.
Donations in Meg's name may be made to Empire State College Foundation, 28 Union Avenue, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866 or Westminster Presbyterian Church, 85 Chestnut Street, Albany, NY 12210.
