DELMAR – Leon A. Aiken, 93, of Delmar passed away on Monday, October 13, 2014.
Born May 27, 1921 in Oswego, he was the son of the late Edward and Blanche (Chetney) Aiken. Leon graduated from Syracuse University in 1943 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Finance and was a member of Phi Kappa Tau fraternity. As a Sergeant in the U.S. Army, he served his country honorably in the South Pacific during World War II. Following his military service, Leon married his college sweetheart, Eleanor Halpin. During his career in private industry, he worked for the Continental Can Co., first in Syracuse and then in Albany. He later worked for the NYS Dept. of Transportation before retiring in 1985.
In addition to his wife, Leon was predeceased by a son, Edward Aiken; sisters, Ruth Aiken and Louise Hill; and a brother, William Aiken.
He is survived by a daughter, Carol Wolfe of Niskayuna; sons, Patrick Aiken of Cleveland, OH and Stephen Aiken of Baldwinsville, NY; grandchildren, Brian and Craig Aiken, Alyssa Bird, Courtney Wolfe, Christopher Aiken, Hannah Stanford, and Matthew and Katherine Aiken; and five great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, October 16th at 12 noon at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 35 Adams Pl., Delmar. Relatives and friends are invited to call beginning at 11 am Thursday at the church.
