DELMAR – Joseph Charles Gardner, Jr. was born in Washington, DC on March 11, 1925 to Joseph Charles and Jeannette (Dunsmore) Gardner, Jr. He passed away on Friday, September 19, 2014 at St. Peter's Hospital after a brief illness.
Joe graduated Bethesda – Chevy Chase High School in 1943 and joined the US Naval Reserve as an apprentice seaman. In 1946 he was commissioned Ensign and in 1947 received his bachelor of civil engineering from Cornell University. In 1949 Joe earned his master's degree in regional planning from Cornell.
Dad was a loving husband to Jean, dear brother of Sally and Dave, and cherished father of Rebecca "Becky" and Charles "Chuck".
Dad was a career civil servant with the Federal Highway Administration and the Department of Transportation.
Joe was an avid hiker and environmentalist becoming an ADK 46er and hiking all of the Catskills. He loved birds, crossword puzzles and the great outdoors. Joe also volunteered for several political and environmental causes.
He is survived by his wife, Jean; daughter, Becky; sister, Sally; brother, Dave;
and several nieces and nephews. Private burial will take place in Saratoga National Cemetery.
