DELMAR - John A. Williamson, 97, died October 21, 2016 at St. Peter's Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Albany.
He was one of eight children born to the late Andrew H. and Eunice Williamson in Buffalo, New York. He was predeceased by his wife, Elizabeth D. Williamson, and is survived by his son, John A. Williamson, Jr. (Bernadette) and his beloved grandson, Andrew J. Williamson. Survivors also include several nieces and nephews. During WWII, John served from 1942 to 1945 in the U.S. Army Air Force, including combat service as a pilot with the 381st Bomb Group in England.
He had a thirty-year career with the State of New York, holding several administrative positions with the Office of General Services, including Chief of Technical Services and, later, as Principal Public Buildings Manager for the Empire State Plaza in Albany.
John was a long-time resident of Delmar, New York, an avid golfer and member of Normanside Country Club. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and the American Legion.
Calling hours will be held at Applebee Funeral Home, 403 Kenwood Avenue, Delmar, on Tuesday, October 25, from 4 to 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Church of St. Thomas the Apostle, 35 Adams Pl., Delmar, on Wednesday, October 26 at 9:30 a.m. followed by burial at Calvary Cemetery in Glenmont.
The family would like to express sincere appreciation to the staff at St. Peter's Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and to the Community Hospice of Albany County for the compassionate care they provided to John in his final weeks.
