DELMAR - John L. Gibson "Jack", 84, formerly of, Chaumont, Syracuse and Massena, NY passed peacefully with his family at his side on, Saturday, September 29, 2012. Jack, born in Massena, NY February 29, 1928, graduated from Massena HS, served in the US Army, and graduated Clarkson University as a Civil Engineer 1953. As a professional engineer, Jack worked on the construction of the St. Lawrence Seaway, the Niagara Power Project, the design of various Albany area water treatment projects. He worked for NY DOT conducting highway safety, research in pavement composition, bridge and guiderail design, and highway maintenance. He received a National Science Foundation Award for his pioneering work in guiderail design. Throughout his life he was involved in community service as a Literacy Volunteers instructor, Knights of Columbus Grand Knight, Boy Scout troop leader, United Cerebral Palsy Foundation and Keveny Academy PTO fund raiser. He was an active Catholic Church member and religious education instructor. He is survived by his brother Patrick and children Nora Gibson, Nancy (Peter) Pesaresi, Susan (Michael) Griffin, Joan Sharlow, Carol (Peter) Brandt, Martin (Janice) Gibson, 11 grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Ellen (McCann), brother Caryl, sister Mary Kosman and son Michael. His compassion, intelligence, creativity, commitment and humor will be missed. Relatives and friends are invited to call at the Applebee Funeral Home, 403 Kenwood Ave. Delmar on Tuesday, from 4 to 7pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, at 10am in the Church of St. Vincent de Paul, 900 Madison Ave., Albany. Burial will be private. In place of flowers, donations can be made to the Capital District Parkinsons Support or any of Jack's other favorite charities.
