EAST BERNE – James W. Roemer Sr. passed away peacefully at home on January 17, 2019 at the age of 96. Born on November 23, 1922 in Albany, NY, he was the son of the late William and Florence (Layman) Roemer. Jim proudly served as a Staff Sergeant in the US Army during WWII in the European Theatre of Operations. After returning home from the War, Jim became co-owner and Vice President of Roemer and Zeller Auto Supply in Albany. He was an expert automotive electrical technician and a recognized expert in the rebuilding and repair of small engines. Jim enjoyed mentoring young people and volunteered as an Assistant Scout Master and Treasurer for Boy Scout Troop 13 for 25 years. His community service included volunteering for Meals on Wheels in the Town of Berne, serving on the Town of Berne Zoning Board, serving as Deacon at the McKownville Methodist Church and then serving on committees at the First Reformed Church of Berne once he and his wife permanently moved to their home in East Berne. During his retirement years, Jim enjoyed sailing and fishing on Warner's Lake, traveling to Cape Cod with his wife along with their bicycles in tow, annual trips to Maui, various bus trips around the country with their friends, and family celebrations. Jim also had a special talent for woodworking and lovingly created many items that have become family heirlooms. Jim is survived by his beloved wife of 75 years, Ruth (Geier), his children James, Jr. (Elaine), Guy (Michele) and Jill. Jim will be lovingly remembered by his eight grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren, as well as his many nieces and nephews. As the second oldest and last surviving sibling, Jim was predeceased by his brothers: William, Walter, Robert, Richard and his sister, Shirley Adams. With the assistance of family, especially thru the devotion of his daughter Jill, Jim was able to live his last years comfortably at home doing the things he loved, including playing card games and solving jigsaw puzzles. The family would like to thank Jim's guardian angels and caretakers Caren, Taylor and Rosemary for their care, concern and love. Anyone wishing to remember Jim in a special way may send a contribution to the First Reformed Church of Berne, 1664 Helderberg Trail, Berne, NY 12023.
