James Martin “Jim” Pedlow, 83, peacefully entered eternal life in the comfort of his home surrounded by the love of his family on Friday, January 10, 2025.
If you knew Jim Pedlow, you were fortunate to have met a gentle, generous, good natured, kind and humble man who loved and lived a great life. His faith in God carried him through every challenge that came his way, and he kept that faith through to the end of his life.
He was the son of Martin Pedlow and Jane McCabe Pedlow, born on August 27, 1941. Jim was raised by his mother and uncle John (Jack) McCabe in the home of his grandparents John and Angeline McCabe in Albany.
Jim was an outstanding athlete in both baseball and basketball at CBA and Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. He played shortstop in Yankee Stadium in 1960 in the Hearst Sandlot Classic. It was a team of some of the best young players in the country.
After graduating college, Jim taught and coached at CBA for 44 years where he earned the respect of thousands of students, many of whom kept in touch throughout his life. He was proud of every student, every athlete, and all of his baseball and basketball teams.
Jim loved playing golf, the Red Sox and many vacations with his family. He attended all of his children’s games and loved spending his summer vacations playing and swimming with them and taking them with their friends on day trips.
Jim was predeceased by his parents, his uncle Jack, brother Marty Pedlow and brother-in-law Ned McGraw. He leaves behind the legacy of a family who loved him more than anyone can imagine including his wife, Bernadette Pedlow, daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Steven Barber, and son and daughter-in-law, John and Amy Pedlow. He was Papa to Steven, Emilena, Cameron and Sophia.
He loved and will be greatly missed by his sister, Mary Jane McGraw, by nephews Marty, Kevin, Packy, Brian, Tim and Dan (Digs) McGraw and niece Kelly Catella and their families. He was loved by his cousins in the Neubauer and Slattery families, as well as his sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law and their families.
The family would like to especially thank Erin, their Community Hospice nurse and Kayla, Jim’s private aide, for their loving care and support.
Calling hours will be held Monday, January 20 from 10 am to 12 pm at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 35 Adams Pl., Delmar. Jim’s Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 12 noon at the Church with burial to follow in Calvary Cemetery, Glenmont.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Thomas the Apostle Church (stthomas-church.org/giving), Albany Medical Center Foundation (albanymed.org) or the Martin P. Pedlow ‘53 scholarship (cbaalbany.org/give-now).
