DELMAR – Herbert S. Fox, Jr., 93, passed away on Sunday, October 8, 2017.
Born in Jamaica, NY on August 2, 1924, he was the son of the late Herbert S. Fox, Sr. and Margaret M. Fox. He received his early education at public schools in Queens, NY participating in many sports at the high school level. Herb proudly served his country during World War II with the U.S. Fifth Army in North Africa and Italy receiving many medals for operations during the Italian Campaign.
At the conclusion of the war, Herb took an army sponsored tour of Switzerland where he met the love of his life and bride to be, Odette Irene Rychiger. They corresponded for many years while she learned English and emigrated to the United States in 1952. They married, raised three wonderful sons and enjoyed 58 years of a beautiful and loving marriage. They traveled extensively through the United States, Canada and Europe.
He was honorably discharged from the Army in October 1945. Herb enrolled at New York University under the GI Bill in 1946, graduating in 1949 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration and Marketing. Following graduation, Herb embarked on a 40 year career in the railroad industry with the Pennsylvania Railroad, Penn Central, and retiring in 1990 as Amtrak Sales Manager for Upstate New York. During his railroad career, he belonged to many professional organizations, being a member and past president of the Philadelphia Passenger Association, New York City Passenger Association and the Albany International Skal Club. He was also a life member of the VFW Post 3185 and American Legion Post 1040 in Delmar.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his beloved wife Odette I. Fox in 2010 and his brothers, Robert E. and Richard M. Fox. Survivors include his sons, Herbert S. (Stephanie) Fox, III, Edward R. (Linda) Fox and Robert M. Fox; grandchildren, Kathryn (Matt) Randall, Michael H. Fox, Alisa L. Fox, and great grandchildren, Kyra K. and Mason M. Randall; brother John S. (Emily) Fox; sister, Dale Crisafulli; sister-in-law, Eileen Fox; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank all the staff at St. Peter's Nursing and Rehab Center for the loving care and continued kindness.
Relatives and friends are invited to call on Wednesday, October 11th from 4 to 7 pm at the Applebee Funeral Home, 403 Kenwood Ave., Delmar. A funeral mass will be celebrated 9:30 am, Thursday, Oct. 12th at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 35 Adams Pl., Delmar. Burial will be in Memory Gardens, Colonie.
