GLENMONT - Harold (Hal) N. Langlitz, 90, of Glenmont, passed peacefully, surrounded by his family, on November 28, 2015.
Hal was born on April 30, 1925 in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, the son of the late David and Mary Langlitz, née Benner. He proudly served in World War II under George S. Patton, in the Seventh Army, stationed in Germany and Austria. Upon his return to the United States in 1946, he began what would become a long and notable career in education administration.
Hal held a bachelor's degree from SUNY Fredonia, a master's degree from the University of Rochester, and a doctorate from Syracuse University. Additionally, he is a graduate of Harvard Business School's Advanced Management Program. He began his career as a music teacher in Fairport, New York, served as a principal in Syracuse, New York, and District Principal of the Westhill School System in Syracuse, New York. He retired in 1995 as Executive Director of the New York State Teachers Retirement System in Albany, New York. During his 28 year tenure, he grew the system from 1.7 billion in assets to over 40 billion in assets. In addition, Hal was influential in passing numerous pieces of legislation, which secured supplemental increases for retired teachers.
Hal enjoyed being a mentor to many former students, teachers, and colleagues. He felt part of his life purpose was to help those less fortunate and gave generously to charities and those in need. This was particularly meaningful to him, as he never forgot his humble roots.
He was the stalwart of his family and friends and loved nothing more than to be surrounded by his family. He is survived by his children David, Mark, Susan, and Steven; grandchildren, Daniel, Bryan, Patrick, and Stephanie, great grandchild, Carson; neices, Maureen, Kathleen, and Marilyn, and a nephew, J.D.
