DELMAR - Florence Canning, 87 died peacefully at her home Friday, June 08, 2012 .
Born in Brooklyn, she was the daughter of the late James and Frances Poretto Cottone. After marrying her loving husband Jack on June 14, 1952 they settled in West Islip, NY where they raised their four children. In 1975 they moved to Schoharie where they lived for 31 years. The couple later moved to Allentown, PA where they lived before moving to Delmar. Florence was a communicant of St. Thomas the Apostle Church.
Florence and her husband loved spending time together. She enjoyed traveling and camping. She was an expert seamstress and gardener, and loved making clothes. Florence also enjoyed interior design, upholstering and antiques.
Loving wife of 60 years to John J. Canning; mother of Trish Canning (Jan Kaplan) of Gold Beach, OR, John Canning (Judy), of Slingerlands, Frances Canning (Jud Donaghy) of New London, NH and Paul Canning (Marilyn) ofChicago, IL; grandmother of Erin, Madeline, John, Samuel, Jack, Harry, Nancy and Brittany; great-grandmother of Trajan; also survived by many nieces and nephews. Florence was predeceased by her 3 brothers.
Relatives and friends are invited and may call Tuesday from 4 to 7 pm in the Applebee Funeral Home, 403 Kenwood Ave., Delmar. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated on Wednesday at 10:30am in the Church of St. Thomas the Apostle, 35 Adams Place, Delmar. Interment, Calvary Cemetery, Glenmont.
