SELKIRK - Eugene Martin Schmidt, 66, of Selkirk, passed away suddenly Wednesday, January 13, 2016 at Albany Medical Center. He was a kind and gentle soul who was devoted to his wife and children.
He was born March 16, 1949 in Albany, New York, the son of the late Harold and Ann (Kost) Schmidt. On November 9, 1974 he married the love of his life, Priscilla MacDonald, who survives in Selkirk. Also surviving are beloved son and daughter, Gordon (Lauren) of Fort Wayne, Indiana and Brenda Schmidt of Binghamton; a brother, Harold Schmidt Jr. of Castleton; sisters- and brothers-in-law Maureen and Rob Geyer, Denise MacDonald and Paul Bartholomew, as well as other dear family members and friends.
Gene was a graduate of Columbia High School and Hudson Valley Community College. He was an employee of the New York State Department of Health until he retired in 2006, after 37 years of service. After retirement, Gene worked part-time for five years at AAA, Albany. Gene's hobby was collecting, including model trains, Gilbert toys, and WW2 memorabilia. He loved garage sales and flea markets. Gene also loved going on day trips, and vacationing in Maine and Disney World. He also really enjoyed tinkering with and fixing things around the house. Gene had an original sense of humor and shared many unique jokes and puns, some of which were actually funny! Gene greatly enjoyed date nights with his loving wife.
Visitation will be Sunday, Jan. 17th from 6 to 8 pm at Applebee Funeral Home. Services will be held at noon on Monday, Jan. 18th at Applebee Funeral Home, 403 Kenwood Ave., Delmar. Burial will follow at Bethlehem Cemetery.
