DELMAR - John F. Sommer, DDS of Delmar passed away peacefully on February 6th surrounded by his loving family. John was 84, the son of Dr. J. Frank Sommer and Rosemary Auert of the Bronx and Saugerties, NY.
John is survived by his wife Barbara (Dewey) and his four children, Andrew, Lisa (Jack) Pederson, Carolyn (Sean) Cahill and Kate (Jason) Towlen. John was also devoted to his nine grandchildren, Katie, John, Lindsay, Charlie and Molly Pederson, Gabriel and Jack Cahill, and Daniel and Nathan Towlen. He is also survived by his sister, Sr. Elizabeth Ann Sommer of the Ursuline Community, his brother Dr. Robert Sommer and his wife Marie of Hingham, Ma and their family.
John attended St. Bonaventure University and Fairleigh Dickinson School of Dentistry. He served in the U.S. Army and then completed a dental internship at Albany Medical Center Hospital, where he remained on the staff for many years. He married Barbara Dewey in 1963, and established his dental practice in Slingerlands. John and Barbara retired to Charleston, Maine, returning to Delmar in 2013. John always loved family time at their summer camp on Long Lake in the Adirondacks, woodworking and landscaping. John was unwavering in the care and welfare of his family. He will be deeply missed.
Relatives and friends are invited to call on Wednesday from 4 to 6 pm at the Applebee Funeral Home, 403 Kenwood Ave., Delmar. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10 am Thursday at St. Matthew's Church in Voorheesville. Burial will follow at Albany Rural Cemetery.
