DELMAR – Dr. John Elton Hotchin, PhD, 93, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 1, 2014 at his home surrounded by his family.
Born April 7, 1921 in Sutton-on-Sea, England, he received his MD from Kings College, London and PhD from Cambridge, England. Dr. Hotchin worked in medical research in the US at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore and Cal Tech in California and in the Common Cold Unit in England. He had also been an assistant professor at the University of British Columbia, Canada and retired from the NYS Health Dept. where he served as the head of the virus lab, division of labs and research in Albany.
He was the husband of Peggy Britain and the late Lois Mary (Benson) Hotchin; father of Jennifer LaFountain (Ron), Shama Jane Hotchin, Tania Katherine Hotchin and Mike Safford; and grandfather of Timothy, Jessie and Max. He is also survived by many dear friends.
Relatives and friends are invited to call on Tuesday from 4 to 6 pm at the Applebee Funeral Home, 403 Kenwood Ave., Delmar. A funeral service will be held 6 pm Tuesday at the funeral home. Private interment will be in Bethlehem Cemetery.
