DELMAR - Dr. Anthony P. Tartaglia of Delmar, NY passed away on March 21, 2016 from heart disease. Born in Albany, NY in 1932, he was the son of the late Louis S. Tartaglia and Teresa Vitale Tartaglia. He is survived by his loving wife, Jeanne Mochi Tartaglia and their three children, Robert A. Tartaglia and his wife Maureen of Weston Ct., John A. Tartaglia and his wife Tricia of Rye, NY., and Catherine L. Tartaglia of Campton, NH. He was the proud grandfather of Olivia, Sandro, Isabella, Thomas and Jack Tartaglia. He is also survived by his brother, Dr. Philip O. Tartaglia and his wife Marlene of Potsdam NY., two sisters, Catherine J. Plummer and her husband George and Louise C. Finkell, both of Albany, NY., and a sister-in law Joanne Gray and her husband Doug of Guilderland. Cousins, nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews and dear friends also survive him.
Dr. Tartaglia was a graduate of Albany High School and Union College where he received the Bailey Cup and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Xi Academic Honorary Societies. He earned his medical degree at the University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry where he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha Honorary Society. He served his internship at Case Western Reserve University Hospital in Cleveland. He began his association with Albany Medical Center in 1959 as a resident physician and later a fellow in hematology. From 1970 – 1975 he held the position of Head of the Division of Hematology. In 1975 Dr. Tartaglia joined the staff of St. Peter’s Hospital where he served as Chief of Medicine. Dr. Tartaglia joined with Dr. Jack Carter to initiate the Capital District Physicians Health Plan (“CDPHP”). In 1984, he rejoined the staff of the Albany Medical Center as Senior Vice President for Patient Care. In 1987 he was named Executive Director of the Albany Medical Center Hospital. In 1990, he was named Dean of the Albany Medical College, a position he held until 1995.
In addition, Dr. Tartaglia was an officer in the 364th Army Reserve Medical Unit Corps.
Throughout his entire academic career, Dr. Tartaglia continued to participate heavily in patient care and teaching while his lectures were widely recognized for their erudition and dynamic delivery. In 1991 he was made an Honorary Alumnus of Albany Medical College.
Throughout his long and distinguished career, Dr. Tartaglia was the recipient of many academic and community awards including; the Albany Medical Center Foundation, Alden March Award in 2006; the Citizens Laureate Award from the University of Albany Foundation in 1998; the Laureate Award from the American College of Physicians in 1996 and the Golden Apple Award for excellence in teaching in 1970.
Dr. Tartaglia served as a Director on a number of both private and philanthropic boards including; a 20 year board membership of St. Peter’s Health Partners; a 15 year board membership of the Double H Ranch; a 15 year founding board membership of Albany Molecular Research as well as board memberships at the Albany Symphony and Opera Saratoga.
Dr. Tartaglia was a mentor to many students and medical professionals, fostering their professional growth and advancement. With his outgoing personality and friendly demeanor, he was never too busy to engage with and learn about people from all walks of life.
Dr. Tartaglia had a never wavering love of life in all its aspects which he fostered through travel, art, opera, friends and family, all of which he particularly relished in his many trips to Italy with Jeanne, his children and grand children. He and Jeanne also enjoyed many trips together in Europe, Asia, South America and the Caribbean.
A much loved son, husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle, Dr. Tartaglia’s widely respected and long medical career is only surpassed by the love and esteem in which he was held by his family and innumerable friends.
