Clarence "Khaki" Markel, a beloved husband, father, and friend, passed away peacefully at the age of 96 on August 9, 2024, surrounded by his loving family in Selkirk, NY. Born on July 27, 1928, in Cobleskill, NY, Clarence led a remarkable life filled with love, laughter, and memories.
Clarence, fondly known as "Khaki," proudly served in the US Navy during WWII, his unwavering dedication to his country. Upon his return, he embarked on a successful career at Local 40 as a heat and frost insulator, where he dedicated 36 years of his life honing his craft.
A man of many passions, Clarence enjoyed the great outdoors through hunting and fishing, finding solace in nature's beauty. His love for sports was evident as he spent countless hours playing softball and golf, showcasing his competitive spirit and sportsmanship. A devoted fan of the NY Yankees, Clarence often shared his opinions on team management, humorously believing he could lead the team to victory.
Beyond his hobbies, Clarence's true joy was spending time with his family. He is survived by his loving wife, Martha, his children: Sherylynn (Wayne) LaChappelle, Debra Siple, Susan Markel, and Robert (Bonnie) Markel. Additionally, he is survived by his stepchildren: Ron Wickham, Kenny Wickham, Lisa Maxwell, and Cheryl Ellerbrock. Clarence is also remembered by his sisters Joan Robinson, Helen Clark, and his brothers Harold Bowers and Bruce Markel.
Clarence's legacy lives on through several generations, including grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, all of whom were touched by his kindness and wisdom. He is preceded in death by his first wife, Joan Markel, brother Larry Markel, and sisters Delores Messer, Rosemary Carney, and Patricia Herzog.
In every interaction, Clarence exemplified warmth, humor, and genuine care for those around him. His enduring spirit and unforgettable presence will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A memorial celebration of Clarence "Khaki" Markel's life will be held on August 17, 2024 at 2:00PM at the Jerusalem Reformed Church in Feura Bush, NY to honor his memory and the profound impact he had on his family and friends. May he rest in peace, forever cherished in our hearts.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Jerusalem Reformed Church or the Onesquethaw Fire Department both located in Feura Bush, NY.
