Carl Edward Winters passed away on February 11, 2022 at the age of 83, entering the front doors of his church St. Thomas the Apostle, in Delmar, New York. His battle with serious medical issues in recent years ended when God said it was time to come Home. If you were lucky enough to know him, you know he was a kind and gentle man. You couldn’t miss his smile. It came so easy for him to find life’s humor and grace no matter the circumstances.
Carl was a devoted husband, and is survived by the love of his life, Karen Koenig Winters, with whom he had just celebrated their 40
th
wedding anniversary. He was also a caring and supportive stepfather to Brigadier General Joseph Robert “JR” Clearfield, USMC (Erika) of Honolulu, Hawaii and Kathryn “Kate” Clearfield Reilly (Patrick) of Delmar, New York. Nothing was ever spared when it came to Katie & JR. When grandchildren came, he was the best Gramps to Patrick Benson Jr. “Ben” & Caroline Reilly and Mackenzie & Abigail Clearfield.
Carl was born in Scranton, PA on May 12, 1938. He is predeceased by his parents, Frank and Mary (Andrews) Winters, and his brother Frank M. Winters, all of Scranton, PA. He is survived by his sister Mary Winters McMahon (Peter) of Philadelphia, PA; sister-in-law, Joan Winters of Scranton, PA; sister-in-law Kristen Trimble (Harvey) of Great Falls, VA; sister-in-law Mary-Kathryn Roelofs (Dick) of Brooklyn, NY; sister-in-law Elizabeth Scribner (Lee) of College Park, MD; and countless nieces and nephews.
Carl was a lifelong educator and a man of great faith. Prior to his marriage, he was a Holy Cross Brother for twenty years and served in the guidance department of numerous Holy Cross high schools. He then went to work in public education as Director of Guidance at both Springfield High School in Delaware County, PA, and New Oxford High School in New Oxford, PA. When Carl moved to Delmar, NY, he worked for nine years as an Admissions Representative for Johnson & Wales University. Throughout his career he helped countless young people find their path.
Carl loved food! He loved his time in the kitchen and was happiest expressing his culinary skills with decadent baked goods. We all had our favorites. He also loved to sing, and was a proud member of the Bethlehem Senior Chorus. He and Karen were avid theatergoers, spending the last decade with season tickets to both Capital Repertory Theater and Proctors. In recent years, Carl also enjoyed his time volunteering at the Town of Bethlehem in their Senior Services office. Of course, Carl’s ultimate devotion was to his family and his many dear friends whose lives were enriched by his loyalty and convivial nature.
A funeral mass will be held at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 35 Adams Place, Delmar, NY on Saturday February 19
th
at 10:00am. The burial will be private.
We kindly ask that you do not send flowers. In lieu thereof, contributions in his honor can be made to the Regional Food Bank, 965 Albany-Shaker Road, Albany, NY 12110.
