ELSMERE- Barbara (Maguire) Palmer, 90, a longtime resident of Elsmere passed away on Friday, January 5, 2018.
Born in Albany on December 7, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Howard and Mabel Maguire, sister of the late Howard Maguire, Jr. and wife of 67 years of the late Ollie Palmer. Raised and educated in Albany, she graduated from Albany High School and Austin Beauty School. She was a hairstylist for 56 years owning and working at her own beauty salon in her home for 41 years. Barbara was a life member of Elsmere Fire Co. Auxiliary and a charter member of Albany County Volunteer Firefighters Auxiliary where she worked on scholarships. She was a life member of Blanchard American Legion Post 1040 Auxiliary where she was past president and served various offices and committees. Barbara was past president of Albany County and also past District president of the American Legion Auxiliary. She served 22 years as a volunteer at the Albany VA Medical Center where she was presented with an award for 5000 volunteer hours and started a babysitting service. Additionally she volunteered delivering Meals on Wheels and taught Sunday school. She loved bowling and bowled with the Tri Town Ladies League for over 50 years.
The most important part of her life was her family. She loved spending summers at her camp at Lake St. Catherine, Vermont. She enjoyed knitting and doing crafts and her tuxedo cat Suki.
She is survived by her daughters, Terri Mirabile (Dave) and Cynthia Jo Maclutsky (Don); grandchildren, Nicholas Mirabile (Jaime) and Jenna Delaney (Rory); and great grandchildren, Rebecca and Elizabeth Mirabile.
A funeral service will be held 1 pm Thursday, January 11

at Applebee Funeral Home, 403 Kenwood Ave., Delmar. Relatives and friends are invited to call from 11 am to 1 pm on Thursday at the funeral home. Members and officers of the Elsmere Auxiliary will meet at 12:15 pm and the Blanchard Post 1040 Auxiliary will meet at 12:30 pm to pay respects to their departed member, Barbara.
