Arthur F. Young Jr., age 95, of Delmar, N.Y., passed away the morning of Wednesday, January 8th, 2025. Arthur was born in May of 1929 in Troy, New York. The son of the late Arthur and Cassie (Williams) Young, and brother to the late Mildred Berard (George). Arthur spent his youth on a farm in Rensselaer County. A graduate of Lansingburgh High School, Art went to work for Manufacturers National Bank of Troy until 1948, when he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving as a Staff Sergeant, 1st Infantry Division during the occupation of Germany post-WWII. He then returned to the Albany area and resumed his banking career. He then met Anne Dereski. They married in October of 1956.
Art began his banking career as a teller for the Manufacturers National bank of Troy, where he spent 10 years before joining the National Commercial Bank and Trust Company in Albany, known today as Key Bank. His career in banking lasted over 40 years, and he ended his working years as Senior Vice President and division manager, Legal Recovery Division of Key Bank, and the Secretary to the Board of Key Corporation and President and CEO of Key Financial Services.
Art was dedicated to country and community, believing in service to help others. Over his lifetime, Art belonged to many non-profit organizations, showing boundless commitment and determination for volunteerism throughout the Capital District. Over a span of 70 years, he served in many capacities, including: CDTA Board member for 20 years, President of the J.O. Wells Albany Memorial Hospital Nursing Education Foundation; Director, Elder and former Governor of the Albany Colony of Mayflower Descendents; Director and Elder of the NYS Society of Mayflower Descendents; Sons of the American Revolution member; Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War member; President and Director of the Elder William Brewster Society; Director and Treasurer of the Capital District Pop Warner Federation; Junior Chamber International member, Pilgrim John Holland Society member; Thomas Stanton Society member; and Founders of Jamestown Society member. Art was Director and Chairman of Adirondack Swimming, a United States Swimming member, a Certified Swim Official for High School and College swimming for 40 years, and served as a Deck Official at four United States Olympic trials. He was recently inducted into the Adirondack Swimming Hall of fame.
In addition to Art’s volunteer activities, he had strong civic and political interests, and was heavily involved in the local and county republican political organizations for more than 20 years.
Art is survived by Anne, his wife of 68 years, and children: Susan (Shawn) McCormick of North Greenbush, Elizabeth (Walter) Waidelich of Salt Lake City Utah, and David Young of Ravena; grandchildren: Kelly (Byron) McCormick, Shawn Michael (Hannah) McCormick, Kevin (Carly) McCormick, Christian (Katrina) Waidelich, Anne Marie (Kyle) Litchfield, Victoria Young and Alexis Young and 7 great-grandchildren (and the 8th on the way).
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am Tuesday, January 14, 2025 at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 35 Adams Pl. Delmar. The family will receive visitors at the church Tuesday 9:00 to 10:00 before the Mass.
Inurnment will be in Albany Rural Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in Art’s name may be made to Albany Co. Society of Mayflower Descendants, 21 Maplecrest Dr. Ravena, NY 12143.
