DELMAR - Arthur "Art" Jewell, 82, of Delmar, peacefully departed this life on Saturday, July 1st, at home amongst his family, after a long illness.
Born, 1929, in Scotia to the late James B. Jewell and the late Myrtle Jewell (nee Lape), he was the brother of Lois Conklin and the late Margery Petersen. Following his graduation from Bethlehem High School, he received a BA in Art from Syracuse University in 1952 where he had been a proud Brother of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. Almost immediately upon graduation, he was drafted into the United States Army to counter the Soviet threat to Western Europe during the Korean War. After returning to civilian life, he pursued his Master's degree at the State University of New York, College for Teachers at Buffalo to better start his chosen profession as an art teacher. Shortly after beginning his 42-year career teaching in the Guilderland School District, he met and married Marian G. Jewell (nee Dashner) in 1957. He ultimately retired as the Art Supervisor for the entire school district. Always one to keep busy, he had several successful business ventures on the side, ranging from half-owner of Jewell-Kowalczyk General Contractors, and a Partner at Young Holidays Travel Agency to what could be described as the greatest passion of his later years: Co-Proprietor of Jewell Antiques, a shared pursuit with his beloved wife. He was a member of the American Legion, donating to the creation of the Korean War Veterans Memorial in D.C. He particularly enjoyed his membership in the Civil War Round Table allowing him to combine his love of history and period antiques. This provided him with fellowship and an opportunity to help save Civil War monuments, memorials, and historic sights.
He is survived by his wife, Marian, three loving children: Susan J. Shuman, David A. Jewell, James J. Jewell, five grandchildren: Michael Shuman, Steven Shuman, Chelsea Jewell, Jenna Jewell, Shelby Jewell and his great-granddaughter: Kylie Rae Jewell. He is also survived by his nieces and his nephew: Sara Jane Fletcher, Amy Folmsbee, Gretchen Snow, Charity Brennan, Debby Petersen, Jennifer Chesser, Lynn Eric Petersen and all of their many children.
Friends and family are invited to attend a viewing from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Friday, July 6th, at the Applebee Funeral Home, 403 Kenwood Ave, Delmar. Funeral Services will begin at 10:00 am, Saturday morning at the First United Methodist Church, 428 Kenwood Avenue, Delmar, followed immediately by the interment at the Bethlehem Cemetery.
