ALTAMONT - Mary Arline Sumner died March 1, 2011 at age 67. Born July 25, 1943 in Albany, NY, she was the daughter of Lucy Jean Cady and the late Casimer Sroka. She graduated from Guilderland High School and received a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Cornell University.
Arline was as a chemist with the Environmental Conservation Agency of New York State for 23 years focusing on water and air quality in the Albany area. She was an avid singer and lover of choral music, singing in her church choirs throughout her entire life. She sang at Carnegie Hall as part of the Masterwork Chorus and Orchestra in 1982
In spite of living with congestive heart failure for 30 years, she lived every day to the fullest of her strength. She loved the outdoors, traveling, and hosting gatherings. She was an avid gardener and swimmer. Her favorite place was Blue Mountain Lake in the Adirondacks, which she visited every summer.
She is survived by her mother, Lucy Jean; her son, Joel Sumner; and two grandchildren - Matthew Piechowski and Megan Piechowski.
A Memorial Service will be held at the Delmar Reformed Church, 386 Delaware Ave., Delmar on Saturday March 5th at 11am. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to Food For the Hungry - www.fh.org.
