Aloysius Hofaker, III “Al” 102, of Delmar, NY passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, November 21, 2024 with his loving wife Harriet (Boniface) Hofaker at his side.
Al was born in Brooklyn, NY on December 29, 1921, the third child of Alois and Elsie (Schmidt) Hofaker’s four children. He and his family moved to Albany where he graduated from Albany High School. Al had a lifelong love of flying and proudly served his country in World War II as a B-24 pilot in the Army Air Corps, achieving the rank of Flight Officer. On February 10, 1945 Al married the love of his life and the mother of his nine children, Eileen M. (Nolan) Hofaker. In 1949, Al established A. L. Hofaker, Inc. Personal and Business Insurance which continues in his name to this day. Eileen predeceased him in 1982.
Al is survived by Harriet, his long-time companion and wife of five years and his children Ronald (Janet) Hofaker, Kathryn Kennedy, Denise (Kevin) Dollard, Janice (Kevin) Tighe, Karl Hofaker, Christine Iannotti and fiancé Robert Bond as well as step-daughters Dawn Shepard, Donna Thibault, Maria Halloran, and Cheryl (Bill) Townsend. He was predeceased by his sons John and Timothy Hofaker, his daughter Ellen “Micki” Ahl, grandson Curnan M. Tighe and step-daughter Cynthia Minick. He is also survived by 26 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren as well as several nieces, nephews, and many dear friends.
As a veteran, Al remained active in the Blanchard-Currey American Legion Post 1040 in Delmar, serving as Commander of the post at the age of 92. At the post, he especially enjoyed playing in the shuffleboard league with his wife Harriet and many of his dear friends. Al was a long-time member of Albany Curling Club and was the last living member of the Albany Curling Club team that won the 1983 National Seniors Curling Championship in Detroit. He was also an avid golfer and was a long-time member at Normanside Country Club in Delmar, serving several years as club president in the 1970s. He was first and foremost a man of faith and a devoted family man who will be greatly missed by many.
The family would like to extend their deep appreciation and thanks to hospice caregivers Sue, Tara and Chee.
