Delmar- Alan Hoffman, 91, went to be with the Lord on August 4, 2022.
Alan loved words, having taught him self to read in early childhood. This love of reading carried on until he knew he wanted to be a writer. He married Margery Whitbeck, his childhood playmate, And they moved to Michigan where he completed his degree in journalism at Michigan State University. His love of birds also inspired him to take classes in ornithology. Alan and Marge moved back home to Delmar and raised their three children, Arden, Alice and Christopher Cooper. Alan loved having adventures. He loved the seashore and also, lake vacations. He loved beauty and culture. He loved the color orange. He loved birds, especially cedar waxwings. For years he took a week off from work to teach “The Bird Class” For the Bethlehem Christian Workshop Along with his constant sidekick Margery as the Bible teacher. They also taught Sunday School for many years together. Alan sang in his churches choir and had a lovely baritone voice. He loved his children, his grandchildren and his great grandchildren. He loved beer, Dr. Seuss and the Yankees. He loved his country and worried for it of late. He loved his church and his God and he greatly loved his wife Margery.
Alan is survived by his wife Margery (Whitbeck) Hoffman, his daughter Arden (Hoffman)Detweiler , His son-in-law Dean Detweiler, his daughter Alice (Hoffman) Parker, his son-in-law Paul Parker, his son Christopher Cooper Hoffman, and his “favorite daughter-in-law“ Mini(Acevedo)Hoffman. Alan had 11 grandchildren - Alissa, Nathan, Laura, Samuel, Susannah Margery, Breanna, Paul Christopher, Bethany Arden, Nicholas Cooper, Joshua Alan, and Maria. He was very proud to say that he had 24 great grandchildren: Liam, Juliana, Olivia Arden, Elias, Cohen, Naomi, Charlotte, Audrey, Dean, Adair, Asher, Ezekiel, Saffron, Juniper Alice, Natalie, Caleb, Nathan, Jack, Charlotte, Dillon Cooper , Brayden, Cecilia, Ethan, and Juliet. Alan leaves behind his sister Susan(Hoffman) Manning and his cousin Nancy Hoffman and his beloved wife of 67 years, Margery.
Funeral services will be held 12:00pm Wednesday, August 10, 2022 at King’s Chapel Church, 440 Rte. 9W Glenmont, NY 12077. The family will receive visitors at the church 10:00 to 12:00 before the service. Interment will be in Bethlehem Cemetery, Delmar.
