Pre-Planning Options

Many people plan for life events such as weddings and vacations well in advance, but many people do not plan for something that is certain to happen, their funeral.  While most people do not want to think about their own mortality, the time to pre-plan your funeral is now.  The primary advantages of pre-arranging your funeral is to relieve the burden on your loved ones in an already emotional time, and to ensure your funeral is carried out according to your wishes, eliminating the task of second-guessing what you would have wanted.  Taking the time now to arrange your funeral is one less thing your loved ones will need to worry about once you’ve passed. Pre-planning and pre-paying your funeral is one of the most thoughtful gifts you can give to your family.

Millons of people in New York State and across the nation are choosing to pay their funeral/burial expenses well in advance. As part of a significant trend, more are doing so each day. Why?

They recognize that taking care of this important need is not only smart financial planning, but provides great emotional relief jush knowing that thier final expenses are covered. Funeral pre-payment also allows and individual to make his or her own specific funeral pre-arrangements at the same time, detailing such important items as hours for visitation and the type and content fo the funeral or memorial service.

Individuals also specify their merchandise selections, which includes everything from the desired casket and monument to flowers and stationery items. Notably, pre-paying funeral expenses and making pre-arrangements also spares surviving relatives and friends from the added stress of having to make such decisions at a time of great saddness and emotional distress.

With the strongest consumer laws in the nation, New York State works as our partner so that you can be confident that your funeral/burial funds are well protected.

Pre-Payment Options

Revocable Funeral Trusts

Every penny (100%) of your money must be placed in a special revocable funeral trust, making certain that these funds will be available when they are needed and used just as you intended. They always remain yours, meaning that you can, at any time, move your account to another funeral home, or even retrieve you money (with interest) - at no cost to you.

Irrevocable Funeral Trusts

A  citizens - regardless of income - are entitled to and deserving of both a proper funeral service and a burial with dignity and respect. In fact, federal and state laws support this guiding principle in a number of ways.

First, any person applying for Medicaid / SSI can set aside funds for the sole purpose of paying their funeral /burial expenses as part of the spend-down process to Mecicaid / SSI eligibility. The funeral/burial funds you set aside will not be counted as part of your financial resourses.

Second, New York State law allows that 100% of these funeral/burial funds be placed in an irrevocable trust account making certain that they will be available when they are needed and used for no other purpose than what they are intended. Unlike revocable funeal trusts, any overages remaining in an irrevocable account after the selected funeral services and merchandise have been provided must be forwarded to the county in where the decedent was residing at the time of death.

Finally, you have the right to use any funeral home you choose. You may also change your selection of funeral homes at anytime, for any reason.
