Obituary of Irene McDermott
McDermott, Irene HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. Irene McDermott of Hilton Head Island, S.C., passed away on April 19, 2017, at the age of 96, due to natural causes. Born in the Albany region, and a long-time resident of Delmar, she lived a full, inspiring life that included working for 30 years as a professor at the College of Saint Rose in Albany, traveling, and lovingly caring for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchild. At The College of Saint Rose, she was awarded the title of professor emeritus for her steadfast dedication to teaching and her students. She always kept a supply of chocolate for visitors and loved learning about people, current events, business news, and the world. Always quick with a story or kind word, she inspired those who met her to appreciate all that life has to offer and to be good to others. She was one-of-a-kind and will be greatly missed by all who were fortunate enough to know her.
She was the wife of the late Lyle Charles McDermott; mother of Eileen Gabrielsen (Karl) and the late Paul McDermott (Susan); grandmother to Matthew and Brian McDermott; great-grandmother to Caroline McDermott; and a beloved friend to all who knew her.
Visitation will be held Thursday, May 4, at 9 a.m. in the chapel of St. Thomas the Apostle Church, Delmar, with a Mass of Christian Burial following at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to Development Office, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, 385 Watervliet-Shaker Rd., Latham, NY 12110-4799. -
Who We Are
Applebee Funeral Home has been serving Delmar and its surrounding communities since 1904. This stately brick building is a defining point of Delmar's Four Corners. However, it was in Clarksville where the family's first funeral home was located at the Clark House, a Greek revival style home built by Adam Clark in the mid 1820's.
