Obituary of John W. Schulenberg

DELMAR -John W. Schulenberg, 86, passed away on December 1, 2016, at Daughters of Sarah Nursing Center after a long decline due to Alzheimer's Disease, complicated by a serious fall. John was born on September 7, 1930, in Passaic, NJ, to Gustav and Mabel (Newman) Schulenberg. He grew up in Queens, NY, graduated from Queens College in 1951, and received his PhD in organic chemistry from Columbia University in 1956. He moved to the Capital District to work at Sterling Winthrop Research Institute, making new chemical compounds to be tested as potential drugs. John spent his entire career there, retiring in 1989. John was a kind, generous and loving person, with a quick wit and many varied interests. In his younger days he enjoyed hiking in the Catskills, breeding and raising tropical fish, and collecting stamps. He enjoyed playing bridge and going to bridge tournaments, and was a Life Master. He loved to travel, and reached his goal of visiting all fifty US states, and also enjoyed going on cruises. Throughout his life he read widely and loved to keep learning. John is survived by his devoted wife of 34 years, Patsy; his loving children, David, Janet, Ted, and Richard Schulenberg; step-children Stefan and Lisa Thomas; and grand-daughter Jeannette. He is also survived by his former wife, and good friend, Shirley Seigle and her husband Bob; by in-laws Joseph and Lynne Lodge of CA; and by cousins, dear friends and colleagues. He was predeceased by his sister Joan Gottlieb. To further medical research, John has donated his body to Albany Medical Center's Anatomical Gift program.
