Obituary of Alan R. McCartney

VOORHEESVILLE – Dr. Alan R. McCartney, EdD, 67, passed away suddenly at home on May 8, 2015. Born in Yonkers on July 30, 1947, he was the son of the late Alan J. and Marion (Raymond) McCartney. Survivors include his wife, Marcia; daughter, Megan Bruno (Sean) of Voorheesville; son, Ryan Alan McCartney (Katie Kennedy) of Wellington, FL; grandchildren, McKenzie, Sean Patrick and Marion Bruno and Mia McCartney; brother, David McCartney (Dee) of Rochester, NY; sister, Patricia Grassman (Michael) of Coram, NY; and several nieces and nephews. At the time of his passing, Dr. McCartney was serving as superintendent of the Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk Central Schools, a position he held since 2012. He previously served as superintendent of the Voorheesville Central School District for 16 years retiring in 2005. After that, he worked as a consultant for education architects Collins and Scoville, as a company representative with Atlantic Energy Solutions for school energy performance contracts and a computer software consultant with Viyya Technologies. Prior to Voorheesville, he served as superintendent of the Crown Point Central School District from 1982-89 and was an assistant Middle School principal at Mexico Academy and Central School District from 1979 to 1982. Prior to that, he was an adjunct professor at SUNY Plattsburgh and a social studies and economics high school teacher at the Sackets Harbor Central School District. He also coached high school football and basketball. He held a doctor of education degree from Columbia University Teachers' College, a master's degree in education and certificate of advanced studies from SUNY Oswego and a bachelor's degree from Thiel College in Pennsylvania. Alan excelled in athletics at Thiel, playing football and wrestling, and later he played semi-pro football for the Watertown Red & Black. He enjoyed golf and was a member of Pinehaven Country Club. He loved the ocean and traveling but his favorite thing to do was spend time with his grandchildren. Relatives and friends are invited to call on Wednesday, May 13th from 3 to 7 pm at the Applebee Funeral Home, 403 Kenwood Ave., Delmar. Funeral services will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to Thiel College - in memory of Dr. Alan McCartney – and mailed to Thiel College, 75 College Ave, Greenville, PA 16125.
