Obituary of Steven B. Carlson

DELMAR - Steven B. Carlson, 74, of Loudonville, NY, formerly of Delmar and Jamestown, NY, passed away on December 5, 2014 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born on June 6, 1940 in Jamestown, son of Ragnar T and Shirley A. Carlson. He graduated Jamestown High School in 1958 and The State University at Buffalo in 1966 with a B.A. in political science. Carlson served his country as an Army Lieutenant in the Vietnam War, and was awarded the Bronze Star. He was the Mayor of Jamestown from 1976 to 1989. Prior to that, he was the City Clerk of Jamestown and the County Clerk of Chautauqua County. Carlson served on the Board of Public Utilities, The Jamestown Community College Board and the Jamestown General Hospital Board for many years. While in office, he created the Jamestown District Heating System, the first cogeneration plant in New York State. He served as President of the NY Conference of Mayors, as well as, a member of the Executive Committee of the National Conference of Mayors. One of his proudest moments was to host the King of Sweden, Carl Gustav, during his visit to Jamestown in 1976. He has been a long term member of the Jamestown Norden Club, and was proud of his Swedish heritage. A resident of Albany area since 1993, he was a Business Specialist with the NYS Dept. of Economic Development. He served as President of the First Lutheran Church Council, and was a delegate to the Upstate New York State Lutheran Synod. Carlson was also a member of the Kiwanis Club for over 30 years. He served as President of the Delmar and Jamestown clubs and as Lieutenant Governor of the Capital Division. He is survived by his wife Judith whom he married in 1979. He is also survived by his daughter Sara Brooke of Loudonville and son Alexander Tage (Ashley) Carlson of Michigan and granddaughter Bailey Harper. Steve loved the Yankees, golf, gardening and bird watching. He was devoted to his family and friends, and his passion in life was to serve his church and the community. He is also survived by his sister Kathleen (Terrance) Horner of Jamestown and brother Craig (Julie) Carlson of Fuquay Varina, NC. He is predeceased in death by his parents and his brother Joel Theodore Carlson. Friends will be received from 4 to 7:00 pm at Applebee Funereal Home, 403 Kenwood Ave., Delmar, NY on Tuesday, December 9th. A Memorial service will be held at First Lutheran Church, 181 Western Ave, Albany, NY, on Wednesday, December 10, 2014, at 11:00 am. Burial will be in the Sunset Hill Cemetery in Jamestown NY. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to First Lutheran Church, Albany, NY, The Nature Conservancy or The American Cancer Society.
